Flashback
North Galleries
February 11, 2012 – May 6, 2012
Flashback is a one-room companion exhibition to Around the Bend and Over the Edge, featuring works from the Henry’s collection that reflect the rebellious and provocative spirit of the 1960s and 70s. It provides a fun look back at the garb of the “appropriately dressed” woman of the 1960s, and the contrasting, innovative Mod and hippy garments of the era that continue to influence fashion today.
The exhibition also looks at the visual art of the day with a selection of paintings by Northwest artists and work by University of Washington faculty of the period who were also breaking with tradition. University of Washington faculty painters Spencer Moseley, Alden Mason, and Francis Celentano were creating Op Art in the mid 1960s, large colorful canvases that were in high contrast to the palette of other Northwest painters such as Guy Anderson, Kenneth Callahan, and William Cumming.
Come and recall where you were in the 1960s, or what you (or your parents or grandparents) wore, and have a flashback to your first mini-skirt or Op and psychedelic art experiences.
